Fire and rescue brigade
11120 Bize-Minervois
The fire and rescue brigade of Bize-Minervois
This fire and rescue brigade was created in 1952. At that time, Ismaël Dejeans was mayor of the village. The initial complement was 14 firemen, under the direction of deputy Jean Cathala, who was the station chief until 1964.
The first appliance was the P45, a military lorry on a Citroën chassis, which was bought from the authorities in Perpignan. On the rear, the water tank was not an original, but was fitted in Bize, shortened and welded into place.

The fire and rescue centre today.
The fire and rescue brigade covers the area of the communes of Bize, Argeliers, Mirepeisset, Ginestas, Sainte Valière, Pouzols, Mailhac, as well as the commune of Agel in the Hérault.
During 2009, the firemen were called out on more than 550 occasions. This is a record for a single year, providing more and more help to the people of the community. However, a marked reduction in road accidents was seen, which might be explained by an improvement in the road networks, as well as the road safety campaigns.

The fire and rescue association
Julien Trilles, president of the association, set out the purpose of the association :
"Our association, consists of around fifty members, both serving fire and rescue officers, as well as retired members and widows. It takes part in recreational activities appropriate to the association, as well as operational activities by making small purchases, which provide a little comfort and efficiency in call-outs. Better social protection through additional insurance or help for members in difficulty are both major objectives of the association. The layout and comforts of the work place in the fire station are in line with the same spirit."
For example, as part of the purchases by the association, two training dummies were bought to help with resuscitation techniques.

The control and alarm centre in Bize-Minervois
During 20007, lieutenant Pierre Rieux, brigade chef, was presented with new communication equipment for alerts. (Up until then, alerts were received by Minitel.) This enhanced system uses computer technology, and comprises a PC, a printer, as well as a modem linked to CODIS at Carcassonne (the operational centre for fire and rescue for the department). "We can manage most of the availability of the personnel with this equipment. It needs to be programmed, and it activates the pagers of one or more firemen, according to availability. In the case of an alert, the message is received, and the siren is triggered simultaneously," explained Pierre Rieux. At the fire station, the duty personnel confirm to CODIS, that the alert has been acted upon.
At the time of the presentation of the system, an alert suddenly arrived, causing the fire officers to spring into action. The pagers, the mobile phones of the personnel and the stations sirens were simultaneously sounded. A few minutes later, two rescue vehicles, lights blazing and engines throbbing, left the station on a mission to put out a fire in undergrowth at a place known as "Le Tioulet", in the land around the commune of Argeliers, about 8 kilometres away. The fire, which was burning over several tens of metres, was rapidly brought under control. It was not yet 8pm, and, as is often the daily lot of these devoted men, the emergencies and the unexpected required all their efforts.
Training and manœuvres
(training run by Mr Patrick François, a rescue instructor from Narbonne)
On the morning of a Saturday in autumn 2007, a training scenario began in the station: protection of individuals, marking out the accident area, first aid, and evacuation... the whole range of the fire officer's skills was under review. For the Bize firemen, these essential reminders are proof of their continual optimal effectiveness at emergencies.
On the station site, a first practical task was set up : using wrecked vehicles, the firemen were required to use heavy cutting tools to release possible victims trapped inside. Each of the firemen took a turn to manipulate the electric cutter and the metal retractor.
A little later, a simulated accident on the local road linking Bize to Cabezac mobilised all the parts of the Bize rescue team. In particular, the rescue lorry (VSR) and its crew, whose mission was to mark out the area, slow down and direct the traffic, in such a way as to avoid a further accident. In this simulation, it was an ordinary autumn morning, and the driver "Mimi" was coming back after an apéritif. Everything seemed to be normal... He lost concentration, and he and his car fell two metres down from the road. Unfortunately, his daughter was with him in the drama. The person known as Mimi was fairly disorientated but conscious and unhurt, but managed to get out of his car. His daughter, however, lost consciousness, and was trapped in the crumpled metal.
The emergency call was made, relayed by Aude CODIS, which sent all the alerts simultaneously and in real time...

In the course of this exercise, the firemen attended on a road still open to the traffic.
