La Grange

« La Grange » restaurant in Bize-Minervois

The Occitan flag hangs over the pot

Open lunch and evening, from Wednesday to Sunday lunch. Tel: 04 68 48 18 90.

Since November 21 2008, the restaurant "La Grange Agricole" has invited us to discover its entry menu at 18 euros, its à la carte menu, and its local wines. Built by Philippe and Jeremy Assié with their own hands, this restaurant was established in their countryside, where their roots go down into this Occitan land.

The exterior is enormous. An olive tree, which is more than 100 years old, seems to invite us and guide us into this space, which has recently been planted with trees, where, nestled amongst the rockery, there will be a small pond to visit this summer.

Inside, there is a numerous and competent team, with, notably, Patrick Evenou from Minerve, previously the owner of the restaurant "Relais de Chantovent", and a large room with magnificent exposed timberwork, solidly fixed to the supporting walls, which give the roughcast appearance of past centuries. Jeremy explained to us that the Grange was conceived, so that people can come together, and tables of friends can be put together. When people meet, they eat together.

Other parts of the room are more intimate. In a corner, a very old plough (the ploughshare is made of wood) fits in perfectly. On one wall, high up, an immense portrait of Castera, wine grower and defender of the farming cause in the 70's, reminds us of where we are, on the land. On another wall, one can also see the emblematic portrait of our late lamented Jean Sire and many others... On the opening day, Philippe, full of emotion, listened to Jeannot Vialade, more than 80 years old. This local man reminded those of us at the meeting of some basic truths, which always leave us with a lump in our throats.

So, it is on these solid foundations, that one can sit down at the table and spend some convivial time.

Jean-Louis Camman.
