Bize today

The big history book of Bize has yet to be written. In the meantime, a number of Bizois have endeavoured to clarify its past. Without claiming to be complete, they have put together the results of their research in a series of booklets that can be consulted at La Récantou ( the senior citizens club) or at the municipal library.

Those who want to understand Bize today must not forget the very strong influence of the wine industry on this village.

After a peak during the 19th century when the vines were practically the only agricultural activity, they still now occupy the majority of cultivated land. Different crises have produced a diversification of cultivation. The return of the olive groves and fruit orchards as well as the appearance of new economic activities, in particular, tourism. But the vine remains predominate and deep in our culture. The seasonal activities of viniculture, (planting, harvesting, pruning, collective decision making), encourage friendliness and unity within our community. All new Bizois are warmly invited to participate in the life of our village.
