Domaine Monastrel

Domaine Monastrel

At the wine estate "Monastrel", Mr and Mrs Enaud, from Bize-Minervois, have built a new cellar. This can be found on a parcel of scrubland next to a parcel of vines from the estate, at a place called "Asmourel", in the area of the Pouzols-Minervois commune.

Built on land, which varies in height by several metres, this building is interesting, because one can access the top of the vats directly. Upstairs, there is a spacious room to receive the grape harvest, and all around, are new vats, made from brand new material, covered in epoxy resin. For the maturing of the wine, there is a north-facing storage area, which is half underground to provide shelter from the high summer temperatures.

The space is specially adapted for the processing of the grape: they are picked and loaded into small boxes on a trailer, before being transported to the cellar. There, they are tipped into a destalker (for the separation of the fruit from the stalks), and then tipped directly into the vat. So, from the moment when it is harvested, the grape is not handled. This improves the quality. Since the summer of 2008, the cellar of the Monastrel estate has developed a retail outlet, which is in addition to the one in Bize. One can visit the site and taste excellent Minervois wines, bottled in several red blends and one rosé.
These estate wines are available in France and for export to Germany and Ontario, Canada. Amongst them, one singles out the excellent blend "Bizan" (see Hachette wine guide 2007). It is a full and powerful wine, well-structured, whose name was inspired by "Bizan de Menerbes", Bize-Minervois in the Occitan language!

Vincent Enaud, wine grower and oenologist, has invested in a structured agriculture programme for the Monastrel estate, with very good wines at its heart.
